Jeremy Irvine and Brian J. Smith have joined the cast of the Bourne spinoff series called Treadstone. The Bourne spinoff was ordered at USA Network back in August, but they didn’t give an exact date the show would premiere. The program will center on the CIA black ops program Operation Treadstone, while following different sleeper agents who “awaken” much like Jason Bourne did in The Bourne Identity. Treadstone will be written and executive produced by Tim King, who is known for his work on Heroes.
The character of Jason Bourne originated in the pages of Robert Ludlam’s Jason Bourne book series. The character was first adapted for the small screen in 1988 for a TV mini-series, which starred Richard Chamberlain as Jason Bourne. Matt Damon is mostly known as the face of Bourne, as he starred in four Jason Bourne films between 2002 and 2016. Jeremy Renner also starred in the 2012 film The Bourne Legacy, but he played the character Aaron Cross rather than Jason Bourne. While neither Damon or Renner are expected to return for Treadstone, the cast of the show just added two actors.
According to The Wrap, USA brought on Irvine and Smith for lead roles in Treadstone. Irvine will be playing the role of J. Randolph Bentley, a CIA agent tasked with eliminating a target, who then becomes involved with an international conspiracy. Smith, on the other hand, will play Doug McKenna, an oil-rig worker who is said to “discover long buried truths about himself“. Irvine recently played the younger version of Pierce Brosnan’s character in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and Smith is known for his work on the Netflix show Sense8.
While the TV series is starting to fill out its cast, the film side of the Jason Bourne universe isn’t completely dead. Damon is staying busy in his film career, but he isn’t denying that Bourne 6 is still a possibility. While the latest entry to the series, Jason Bourne, was a disappointment for many people, Damon has said that an “incredible story” could possibly reunite him with his Bourne co-workers. As for Renner, a Bourne Legacy sequel doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon.
Some would rather have Damon or Renner return to the Bourne franchise, but giving the series a TV show could be an interesting way to further develop the Treadstone mythology. USA Network has also developed the TV shows Shooter and The Purge, which are both based on films. Both of these shows got fair reviews and The Purge was even renewed for season 2. If Treadstone can find the right cast and the right groove in the TV landscape, the Bourne spinoff could potentially be another big hit for the network.
