Dick Cheney Movie Gets Christmas 2018 Release; Trailer Coming Next Week

Annapurna Pictures’ Vice starring Oscar winner Christian Bale as Dick Cheney has been set for a Christmas release, and a first trailer will come out next week the studio has announced. Bale underwent one of his signature astounding physical transformations to play Cheney, the former vice-president, who became a controversial figure while serving under president George W. Bush.

Directed by Adam McKay, Vice is set to explore ”the epic story about how a bureaucratic Washington insider quietly became the most powerful man in the world.” The movie also stars 5-time Oscar-nominee Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney, Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld and Sam Rockwell as president George W. Bush. Jesse Plemons, Alison Pill, Lily Rabe, Tyler Perry, Justin Kirk, LisaGay Hamilton, Shea Whigham and Eddie Marsan round out the cast.

Audiences will get to see McKay and Bale’s take on the life of Dick Cheney when Vice (previously reported to be titled Backseat) hits theaters on Christmas Day 2018, Annapurna Pictures has announced. A first trailer for the movie is set to debut on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Bale’s appearance as Dick Cheney was previously revealed in set photos, but the trailer will be the first chance for folks to see the full extent of his physical transformation. Bale of course previously bulked up for his role in American Hustle, and also slimmed down alarmingly for his role in The Machinist.

Bale and writer-director McKay previously collaborated on The Big Short, a satiric look at the 2008 financial meltdown that also starred Carell and Ryan Gosling. McKay won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Big Short, which was co-written with Charles Randolph. Bale earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for the film as well. After that prior collaboration, curiosity is high for what Bale and McKay will unleash as they explore the life of Dick Cheney, one of the men most responsible for shaping the post-9/11 world.

Obviously, awards watchers will be first in line to see Vice when it comes out smack in the middle of Oscar season. Bale will be high on the list of potential Best Actor nominees after shaving his head and gaining weight to play Cheney. Adams too will be one to watch, given her five previous acting nominations (she has yet to take home the prize however). It remains to be seen what other actors may emerge from the cast to garner awards buzz, but Rockwell is always one to watch after his win for Best Supporting Actor last year for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. McKay himself will be on the watch-list for both Best Director and Best Screenplay.
