Screen Rant: First of all guys, amazing job on the film. It’s great seeing you back in this franchise, in the most iconic role…of any Rocky villain at least. Did you ever think that you would be coming back and how early on in the process did you know that Ivan Drago was going to be coming back?
Dolph Lungren: I never thought I would be back as Drago. About two years ago, Sly sent me a text. He was going on about, “play this guy again…what do ya think?” I’m like, “Ah…” And says, “sins of our fathers.” Or something like that. And that was interesting. But then I didn’t hear anything and then I started hearing about a movie called Creed 2. And I didn’t want to do it at first because I scared I was going to mess kinda iconic role and they were going to use me in some kind of super villain role, like I didn’t want to do it in that way. But then when I read the script that Steven [Caple] had written and I met with Florian [Munteanu] and I thought “Wow, this is like a real movie. This is fantastic.” What a cool way to bring back Ivan Drago and then I really wanted to make the picture.
Screen Rant: The film does a great job of making me care about Viktor winning as well, because he has a lot on the line as well. So speaking of which, what is Viktor’s motivation throughout this film?
Florian Munteanu: Viktor’s motivation is pretty clear. He wants to make his father proud. That’s the only person in his life that he cares about. And he really wants to make his father happy. He desires the love of his father, but his father’s not very eager to give him that love. So, kind of pushing him and goading him pretty hard. And that’s why in the end of the day after the mansion scene when the mother steps in and stuff. There’s a breakthrough between the two and I think Ivan senses that. You know when we do the pad work and all that stuff. Ivan senses that something changed in Viktor. He’s not listening anymore that much to him, they are not on the same page anymore. And that’s when Ivan realizes how much he cares about Viktor and I think that’s a cool storyline.
Screen Rant: I agree. 1980’s U.S.S.R. is a lot different than the current Russia now. 30 years have passed since we’ve seen Ivan Drago. Where are the Dragos now?
Dolph Lungren: You mean right now? Well, after the movie opens and he lost the fight again. I guess we’re back in Ukraine. I don’t know if we been let back in Russia again, we’re probably back in Ukraine training. And I think that I realized I love my son now and I’m not going to be so hard on him. But I do think that together we are going to plan some kind of comeback. Not in a kind of vengeful way, but we still want to prove ourselves. So we’re back there, we’re like working on it man. It’s going to happen.
Screen Rant: I’m excited for it guys. Thank you so much, you did a great job.
